Once More, HBIS Wins WSA Sustainability Champion Title

April 9, World Steel Association released the winner’s list of 2024 Sustainability Champion of Steel industry, praising 11 steel manufacturers for their efforts in sustainable development in 2023. With excellent performances in environment, social management and economy, HBIS once more, also as the only Chinese steel mill, won the title. HBIS Chairman Yu Yong, Leon Topalian, Chairman of World Steel Association Chairman & NUCOR President and CEO, HBIS Vice President Li Yiren attended the event.

Excellent Sustainable Development Competition was launched in 2018 and was dedicated to promotion of member companies of the association making extraordinary progresses in sustainable development. With its top performances of HBIS, together with ArcelorMittal, BlueScope, China Steel, JFE, JSW, POSCO, Tata, Tenaris, Tenrium and Voestalpine AG won the Champion titles this year.

In 2023, HBIS made remarkable progresses in high end, intelligent and green development. HBIS world’s 1.2million hydrogen steel making pilot project successfully commenced its operation and it is the first project of hydrogen energy entering large scale industrial application, making a milestone of a brand new hydrogen steel making application, beating traditional carbon steel making path in Chinese and world steel industry. HBIS launched China’s first Showpiece Region of Green Reform of Steel Industry. HBIS also implements Low Carbon Product Development Plan (2023-2026), and together with China Metals Society, HBIS held Hydrogen Metallurgy Seminar and launched the draft discussions of Safety Regulation and Standardization Reviews, leading the development of green and low carbon development.

HBIS strengthens its cooperation with Siemens in upper and downstream industry chain, in energy optimizations, green and low carbon production and services. HBIS launches CCUS industry pilot project with BHP, Green Hydrogen Energy Chain with SINOPEC, China’s first Green Auto supply chain with Great Wall Holding Group. HBIS is reforming to Material and Services by implementing projects to 3-5 years, restructuring and merging new industries. It is also strengthening its overseas development.

HBIS POSCO Automobile Strip joint venture has commence is production and the project entered the list of 2023 Intelligent Showpiece Factory and Application Vision of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. WeShyper, an industrial Internet Platform, independently developed by HBIS entered the list of 2023 New Cross Industry Internet Platform of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. HBIS Serbia Green and Environment Protection Project won the A title of EU and UNDP. For 15 years, HBIS has won its position in World Top 500 enterprises, for years, HBIS has been the most internationalized Chinese steel enterprise, winning the annual Chinese ESG Title.
